    Erik Stern Movement Discovery Workshops

Over the decades, my colleagues and I have devised “movement discovery activities” that get dancers exploring, preparing their bodies, making decisions, and self-evaluating.
They have been effective with underserved populations with little exposure to dance as well as student and professional dancers. Some involve simple props.
For the workshops at CyberDance, the warm ups will lead to choreographic innovation and problem solving.
Each activity has straightforward guidelines (or parameters). Movers grapple with patterns: of behavior, of muscles, of thought, of organizing movements, of collaboration, of creativity.
Problem solving takes place on many levels: one’s own body, how to challenge oneself, the nature of one’s choices, and how through collaboration these choices can be expanded or altered. The activities lead to self-discovery and seeing how each individual moves and thinks.
I enjoy dreaming up ways to get people absorbed with movement then seeing what happens.

If this is hard to picture, join us Sunday November 8 and Sunday November 15 from 1pm to 4pm and find out.

Erik A. Stern has choreographed over 70 works for professionals and students, and has toured his work throughout the U.S. as well as to Europe and Asia. He danced for 10 years with Tandy Beal & Co., creating the title role in her epic Outside Blake’s Window. Erik conceived, choreographed, wrote, produced, directed, and performed in Demolition Derby, when a mind loses its license to drive, a dance-theater performance about a son caring for parents with dementia that appeared at the John Jay College Theatre in New York City. He freely mixes Modern Dance, the Pop-locking he encountered growing up in inner-city L.A. and Rhythm Tap.
The California-based dance company he co-directs with Karl Schaffer entered the national scene with 4-Footed Hamlet, a reverent dance-theatre parody of the bard’s work was featured on NPR’s Morning Edition. Integrating original spoken dialogue and technical movement, the company received six NEA grants. Their showTwo Guys Dancing About Math was performed over 500 times. Their TEDx Manhattan Beach Talk shares their innovations connecting math and dance on stage and in classrooms.
Emeritus Professor at Weber State University, Stern is a freelance artist in addition to having several collaborative projects in the works. He received a B.A. in Biology from UC Santa Cruz and an M.F.A. in Dance from CalArts. In 2022, Erik was a visiting fellow at the University of Bologna Institute of Advanced Study.
